Portrait Photography workshop

I recently took a day long portrait photography workshop and this is my favourite photo that came out of it:

I was the only film user there.

It was really great to put into practice everything I’ve read on how to use natural light for portraits, just using a simple backdrop and maybe a reflector for assistance. I feel a bit braver about trying it for myself now.

My hit rate for successful shots wasn’t particularly good and I think it was because I was too obsessed with using the biggest possible aperture; I should have closed it down a bit so the focussing had a bit more forgiveness in it and there weren’t quite so many shadows. I also needed to get closer - as ever! Next time I think I’ll do more bracketing/muck around with the exposure compensation.

The workshop was run by Graham Parish at The Bristol Folk House - I’ve done a few different courses there and highly recommend them.

The photo was shot with a Pentax ME Super on Ilford XP2.

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

This is my favourite shot from my friend Vicki’s wedding; it’s of her dancing with her friend Doug.
The photo was taken with a Nikon F55 on Ilford XP2 film, using the camera’s built in flash/speedlight.
